Our aim is to shed light on how we structured the incubation process tailoring it to our youth. By sharing this experience, we hope to inspire and empower youth organisations, youth workers and leaders, educators, and aspiring young entrepreneurs to create, innovate, and drive change in their communities. Project period we successfully established two youth incubator sites in P\u00e9cs, Hungary, led by THIE, and Kristiansand, overseen by YDA. At these incubators, we&#8217;ve provided continuous and easily accessible mentorship throughout the youth projects&#8217; lifecycles, supporting young people from ideation and planning to implementation and dissemination. We&#8217;ve systematically documented the processes and experiences within the incubators, contributing to the development of our educational materials, such as this websites contents. Additionally, we&#8217;ve shared regular updates on our social media platforms to keep our community informed. It aimed to create an inclusive and supportive environment that allowed these young individuals to thrive in trying our project management for the first time. As one participant shared, &#8220;I really appreciated the opportunity to work with people from different schools. We made great friendships that will last beyond this project\u201d. Another said \u201cIt was eye-opening to see how our ideas and perspectives could come together even if we are so different.&#8221;<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The structure of the incubator&#8217;s activities was comprised based on the facilitators experience in non-formal and creative workshop organisation, as well as information learnt from the desk research. One of the Hungarian facilitators explained, &#8220;We knew that the youth came from different schools and age groups, who are limited in mobility due to bad local transport schedules and busy lives- so we had to find a way to get together without rushing or worrying about catching the next bus.&#8221; This approach started with a &#8220;kick-off&#8221; event, a weekend where the youth came together to immerse into the project management, social entrepreneur world. During this time, they not only got to know each other but also dived into essential project management training. &#8220;The weekend was like a bonding experience, and it set the foundation for their journey,&#8221; shared the facilitator.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The initial sessions focused on introducing the youth to the basics of project management, which was a novel concept for many of them. The intention was to equip them with the knowledge and tools to transform their ideas into reality. The curriculum delved into the project life cycle, project management terminology, planning processes, and the importance of teamwork.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">As the ideation phase progressed through several meetings throughout the months, participants formed two teams, each with a different focus. These teams were composed of youth whose ages ranged from 15 to 19 years. They were dedicated to further developing their project ideas and, eventually, bringing them to life. Before commencing, they learnt how to write a project application using a simulated \u201cproject call\u201d, they made budgets and planned out the details as well as communicated and sent plenty of emails to different local partners.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Creativity was at the heart of the incubator&#8217;s functioning. Cooperative tasks and non-formal and informal teaching methods were organised both online and in-person meetings to monitor project progress, fostering an atmosphere of innovation. This hybrid version was adopted due to COVID, however, the Hungarian group met up in person mostly. Mentorship activities were a crucial part of these sessions, providing guidance and support to the young participants. The youth was then guided through the project implementation and dissemination process of two successfully completed youth-led projects. This unique experience was designed with a careful consideration based on the facilitators experience in non-formal facilitation, start-up consultancy and her economics. Many changes had to be made but it was a great success despite the challenges brought about by COVID.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The program kicked off during the autumn semester, focusing on building strong bonds among participants. Team-building activities laid the foundation for a collaborative environment that would prove vital in the months to come. The incubator focused on communicating and listening closely to the youth when setting up the site, we informed them early that no questions are stupid and all should be asked. In Kristiansand, many of the incubator participants live in rural areas outside of town however they attend schools in the same area, making it easier to meet after school. In this way we could bring the incubator to them, at a time that allows them to get home in a good time, and still be present and active. We held weekly meetings and mentor sessions physically, but with the pandemic, that became challenging. So, we focused on building strong connections from the start, and shifting over to a hybrid model with teams meetings and mentoring sessions before we could return to mostly physical meetings again.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The autumn semester was dedicated to nurturing understanding of an entrepreneurial mindset, creativity and ideation. Participants explored various activities that enabled them to translate their innovative ideas into tangible projects. Project management, social entrepreneurship, Erasmus+, and civic participation were introduced through non-formal learning workshops and activities. As a participant noted, &#8220;The sessions were engaging and interactive, and I learned about things I&#8217;d never even heard of before.&#8221;<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The incubator warmly welcomed entrepreneurs, pitching coaches, politicians, and youth workers as special guests throughout the semester to hear their views on their projects and the needs of their local community. These guest appearances brought real-world insights and expertise into the learning environment. Group and individual mentoring sessions further enriched the experience, equipping participants with the skills to develop projects and tackle challenges effectively. It was during these mentoring sessions the youth was tasked to do thorough self reflection on video to look back at after the process. These ultimately turned into our project progress vlogs.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The autumn semester also included excursions to view real-life project examples. As the facilitator highlighted, &#8220;We wanted them to see how the knowledge and tools they were gaining could be applied in practice.&#8221; These excursions provided a tangible understanding of the impact social entrepreneurship and local activism could have in their community. It also allowed them to try civic participation in different ways empowering them.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Reflection was a consistent practice during the program. This reflective approach allowed participants to process their experiences and incorporate newfound knowledge into their project ideas. As one participant shared, &#8220;The reflection exercises helped me understand my growth, and see my mistakes and successes.&#8221;<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">With the arrival of the spring semester, the focus shifted to idea generation and brainstorming, building on the creative foundation established in the autumn. They nailed the idea plan down, and also experienced a simulated &#8220;call&#8221; for projects where they wrote and fine-tuned their project applications.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The spring semester emphasised planning and implementation as participants worked diligently to bring their projects to life. Smaller groups were formed to work on different projects, encouraging individual youngsters to take on leadership roles. Their projects were diverse, but their shared experiences allowed them to support one another in unique ways, providing social and emotional support, as well as time and resources.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The dissemination phase was an opportunity for participants to share their projects with a wider audience, a valuable lesson in effective communication.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Close mentoring continued to provide support, further enhancing project development. Excursions remained an integral part of the program, allowing participants to attend each other&#8217;s projects as well as other community initiatives. Reflective exercises persisted, ensuring that participants continued to learn from their experiences and growth.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The YDA incubator equipped participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond. As one of the participants concluded, &#8220;I not only developed project management skills but also a strong sense of responsibility towards my community.&#8221;.
