Beyond The Closet
A Journey into Queer Culture
By Matilde and Yelva from the YDA incubator
Project Description
“Beyond The Closet” was an extraordinary interactive art exhibition project that ventured to illuminate the lesser-known facets of queer culture. This captivating exhibition unfolded within the welcoming embrace of the local cultural centre in Kristiansand, Samsen, coinciding with Democracy Week, running from May 2 to May 8, 2023.
At its heart, “Beyond The Closet” aspired to be more than just an exhibition; it sought to be a catalyst for a deeper understanding and acceptance of diverse sexualities and orientations. In doing so, it set out to bridge the chasms of misunderstanding that can separate individuals. The project championed the cause of tolerance, justice, and solidarity, with a particular focus on dismantling stereotypes and prejudices. Its mission was especially vital in rural regions and communities often considered less inclusive.
- Artistic Alchemy: The essence of the project lay in preparing and setting up an art exhibition at the Samsen Cultural Centre in Kristiansand. The exhibition featured a captivating array of self-made art pieces, interactive art activities and a video interview of a local drag queen about self-expression and sexuality. Each piece was a labor of love and careful consideration.
- Documentary: A video documentary took shape, delving into a conversation with a local drag queen. This interview touched upon the complexities of sexual identity and self-expression, offering an intimate glimpse into a world often misunderstood.
- Sustainable Creation: The gallery and its interactive activities were carefully planned and assembled. What made this endeavor even more remarkable was the commitment to sustainability. Much of the materials used were reused or recycled, an embodiment of the project’s dedication to eco-consciousness.
- Virtual Lifeline: Beyond the physical exhibition, the project ventured into the digital realm. Interviews were filmed, and the reactions of those experiencing the exhibition were recorded. This digital content found its home on various social media platforms, ensuring that the essence of the exhibition transcended its physical confines and lived on in the online world.
The tangible fruits of “Beyond The Closet” were multifaceted:
- A breathtaking array of paintings that captured the vibrant spectrum of queer culture.
- The poignant and eye-opening video featuring the heartfelt interview with a local drag queen.
- The grand opening event of the exhibition, a moment of celebration and enlightenment.
- The exhibition itself, an intricate tapestry of art, emotion, and identity.
- A treasure trove of videos and photos that were shared on social media, reaching audiences far and wide.
- Engaging video vlogs that offered a behind-the-scenes look at the project, providing youth with a glimpse into the world of creating an art gallery for the first time.
The impact of “Beyond The Closet” extended well beyond the physical exhibition space. An article found its place on the Samsen and Kristiansand Municipalities website, a testament to the project’s significance. Video content, encapsulating the project’s essence, was shared on YDA’s social media platforms. A dedicated Instagram account was crafted for the project, ensuring a digital presence that mirrored the project’s spirit.
But the journey didn’t end there. The project’s results and experiences were thoughtfully chronicled in a video diary, a digital narrative that would continue the project’s reach. This narrative found its home on the I.D.E.A. website and YouTube channel, serving as an enduring testament to the project’s purpose. The interview with the drag queen continues to shine as a beacon of understanding on these platforms. “Beyond The Closet” wasn’t just an exhibition; it was a lasting testament to acceptance and understanding.
