Dynamic Dialouge

Break barriers, build bridges

By Sandor and Reach from the YDA incubator

Project Description

The “Dynamic Dialogue” event was hosted at Samsen Cultural Centre on May 4th, 2023 during the city’s Democracy week as the only youth led event on the main program. It was a unique non-formal event meticulously organised and facilitated by two of YDA’s incubator participants. The workshop took a creative approach to highlight and exaggerate negative debate culture, serving as an experiential lesson to help participants grasp the principles of constructive conversation and the consequences of destructive debate. After the workshop, a “youth talks” session was held for youth to meet, share experiences and make plans for further events.

This workshop aimed to create an environment where participants could openly engage in debates while respecting one another. By exposing the flaws of bad debate behavior, the project’s broader objective was to promote dialogue, solidarity, and democracy, emphasising the value of civil discourse and constructive conversation. The workshop has a specific focus on youth and their experience on how they use their voices for change, how do they feel limited? Where do they feel empowered? How do they do it?

The “Dynamic Dialogue” workshop consisted of two central components: a vivid demonstration of negative debate culture and a segment known as “youth talks.” During the workshop, participants experienced immersive activities designed to underscore the importance of respectful and constructive conversation. Following these activities, the “youth talks” created a platform for open dialogue and networking, facilitating connections between local youth and visiting delegations from all over Europe, all while enjoying pizza together.

The outcomes of this workshop extended beyond its duration. It equipped the participants, young individuals aged 13 to 29, with the essential skills needed to engage in constructive debates and discussions in various aspects of life. This contributed to the broader goal of fostering a more tolerant, just, and equal society, where constructive dialogue serves as the cornerstone of democracy. Notably, the workshop was the only youth-led initiative featured in Kristiansand’s Democracy Week main program, establishing new connections and relationships between youth across different organizations and countries.

Documentation of the workshop’s journey, including videos, vlogs, photos, and Instagram reels, has been shared on YDA’s social media channels and website. The aim was for the skills acquired during the workshop to have a ripple effect, reaching classrooms, workplaces, family discussions, and other youth organizations to promote a healthier debate culture. Furthermore, the impact of “Dynamic Dialogue” was amplified through media coverage, including appearances on NRK Sørlandet’s radio and news. The enthusiasm generated by this initiative led the group to initiate the Youth4Youth Incubator, a platform for young people to delve into facilitation, non-formal learning, and project management on a weekly basis.
